Whether it’s for holidays, company meetings or deadlines. you’ve got to have a calendar. A fancy calendar should be able to filter department or workgroup level event vs. organization-wide events, but events should be visible. The era of separate calendaring (e.g., “shop calendars”) may not have gone completely out of favor, but event coordination across teams tends to move planner away from siloed planning systems.
Today’s intranet calendars support multiple workgroups, individual vs. group calendars, official holidays and interact nicely with email and meeting management tools.
If the calendar isn’t driving substantial traffic to your intranet, you’re doing something wrong. At the least, workers check on the status of important meetings and holidays. Yes, they have smart phones, but generally know better than to rely on those alone.
